Who is Jude Blay Yawson?

I am a writer, in general a creative being, and a Philosophy graduate with the honest dream of becoming a filmmaker.

Quick summary of myself; football fanatic, music lover, lifelong boxing fan, an invested cinephile, and an anime/manga nerd. The connector between all of what I love is culture, community, and the power of creativity itself. I champion Blackness through my work, as representation is so important to me, and utilise my studies in Philosophy as a basis for a humane appeal in my work.

I was expelled from school at the age of 13, staying expelled at a PRU until College. My career has been a retaliation to that, as potency is capped when you are discarded from the norm. So I wrote, wrote, wrote and created until I could see something real.

Hence I love communicating, I love working with people, especially youth in need of inspiration and understanding of their place in Society. That's me - in brief.

I am represented by OWN IT! and agent Crystal Mahey-Morgan

This is my website, a hub of that creativity, a home for my film reviews, write ups and a portfolio of my work thus far. Pree, have a gander, and enjoy.

The Story

I am a British born Ghanaian writer, creative, and aspiring filmmaker from South East London. I have been writing for over 18 years, since 12, and creating since I could string concepts together. I am currently working on two books, I conduct workshops, while working on a film podcast Played In Full, and a YouTube production channel. Below is a timeline of my work:

Timeline:

  • Started writing for the first time when excluded from school, creating Dragonball Z fan fiction and producing short films on PowerPoint utilising gifs, sprites, and JPEGs while expelled from school for a week in 2005

  • From 2005-2012 I wrote stories, character concepts, and worked on writing prompts on platforms like Reddit to get better at writing with the aim of writing films

  • In 2012 I started to study Philosophy at the University Of Roehampton, where I'd convert studied material into essays and articles for people to read

  • In 2014 I wrote a piece on Depression that garnered a lot of attention due to the topic still somewhat being a taboo within such a community

  • In 2015 I graduated from Roehampton gaining my Bachelor's Degree in Philosophy. I communicated with Stormzy on the potential of working on a book together in the future

  • In 2016, after a suggestion from a friend to fall back into my early days of creative writing, I wrote my first poem on Support. I also started studying a Cultural Studies MA at the School of Oriental and African Studies.

  • In 2016 I wrote my first proper film review on Fences for FWRD .

  • In 2018 I was invited to my first early film screening by VAMP to DOLBY Studios to watch Black Panther, and the Merky team had set up the early rendition of what was to become Merky Books

  • Later on in 2018, I co-wrote and authored Rise Up: The #Merky Story So Far for Merky and Penguin Random House

  • In 2019, I edited Words First, a poetry collection for the BBC and Wrecking Ball Press

  • In 2021 I started to freelance with Complex, interviewing the likes of Reggie Yates, Edson Sabajo, Mo Farah, Raheem Sterling, John Boyega, Daniel Kaluuya, Davido, Leon Edwards, Paddy Pimblett, and more.
